Maintenance Air Compressor- How Should You Do It?

If you need compressed air to operate pneumatic components or for other purposes like- cleaning or filling, you need an air compressor. Now an air compressor besides being a necessary tool which serves your purposes is an investment too. Also, if you need a compressor to operate properly, you need to do scheduled maintenance of an air compressor not only to make sure it does not fail you when you need it most, but also for better service and efficiency. So, maintenance air compressor– how you can do it, here is few tips:

  • First, you need to read your user manual properly. Manufacturers often recommend maintenance schedules and steps in their manual. Also, to run maintenance you need to have diagram of your machine which you can easily find in your manual. Once you get familiar with it, now you can go for maintenance.
  • You need to check all valves if these are operating properly. If there is any faulty valve, you need to change it immediately. Because, a faulty valve will cause leaks which will lead to system failure, poor performance and efficiency. Moreover, safety valves or pop up valves need to be made sure operating properly for avoiding possible hazards.
  • If you are not using any dryer for your compressor input, you need to drain moistures from the compressor while doing maintenance. Normally, air is moisture contained. So, when the compressor draws air from the atmosphere, moisture gets accumulated inside the circuit which may lead to rusts inside tubes. So, check it weekly and drain moisture when possible and necessary.
  • Check your hoses if there is any creasing or loose ends which may lead to possible failures. Replace if you need to or repair if possible, but never left them without being taken care off. Because those hoses will take in and out your air to and from the compressor, so, you need to make sure, these are in good conditions.
  • If your compressor uses oil, you need to change it on regular interval like 500-1000 hours usually in 3 months. Also, you need to be bit selective while changing the oil, you need to use proper graded compressor oil like- SAE grade 30, you can’t use normal motor oil for this. Before you change the oil, keep it shut for a while so that the oil cools. Then, put a pan under the drain plug to collect the used oil. Once all the oil is collected, you can fill in new oil and re-attach the plug.
  • You should clean trash off from the motor, air hoses, flywheel, tank, and cooling fins. You need to keep your compressor in a cool dry moisture free place. Check for leaks, if there is any, you can weld them if possible. If not, you need to replace them.
  • Using an air filter for better performance is must. If you don’t use a filter, more dusts will get accumulated inside the compressor and will lead to rusts. Also, you need to replace your air filter with a new one at a regular interval. Air filter cannot suck in proper amount of air, if dirt is stuck in it. So, you need to make sure it never gets filthy more than allowable state. Also, a filthy air filter can put extra pressure on the air drawing unit.

An air compressor is a vital industrial tool. A smooth performance is always desired, but lack of maintenance can lead to service failure. So, a small maintenance air compressor effort can save your valuable time and money by keeping your compressor in proper condition.
